These ten inspiring biographical accounts of 19th century Texas women who changed history are straightforward, well-researched, and so well-written that I would recommend the book even to young readers, though there is more than enough here to engage a curious adult. Of particular interest are the stories of Cynthia Ann Parker, raised by Comanches, Sara Estela Ramirez, a Mexican-born poet, and "Texas" Guinan, a nightclub owner and silent film star. Andersen's admiration and compassion for her subjects is evident, though she is careful to present the facts of their lives in an unbiased and impartial manner. More Than Petticoats is an important contribution to the existing literature on women's history and a must-read for anyone interested in Texas, feminism, women's suffrage, civil rights and pioneer history.

Greta Anderson provides a glimpse into the lives of ten women that possessed a true pioneering spirit in pre 1900 Texas.As opposed to some historical accounts that can get bogged down in facts, this book represents history in short stories that make for an enjoyable read. It is wonderful to find a book like this that can tell the tale of history through the eyes of a woman.Greta successfully puts flesh on the bare bones of history.I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the role of women in history, particularly women of the south. I was inspired by this book and would love to see a second book containing more stories about the women of Texas.

I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to others. For me it was a quick, refreshing, and interesting read. I still think about the characters and stories months after finishing the book. For my 12-year-old daughter, the book was inspiring. Of the many stories, the most inspirational for her was Sophie's refusal to be fired as the railway doctor because she was a women. The book tells the stories of many strong women, and I was struck by the variety of ways in which women can become leaders and role models. I hope more books like this will be written so that women's history can be preserved.

This book is another masterpiece by Netter. Each page has a large detailed illustration. Netter is a genius. The way Netter draws something is usually the best way for a student to mentally visualize the topic. Netter takes complex topics and makes them relatively straightforward by clever, aesthetically pleasing drawings that combine the anatomy, physiology and pathology. These words are based on a lot of experience as I have taught neuroanatomy over the past 10 years and am a neuroradiologist.

I have the German edition and used it during my studies for the medschool exam. The pictures really help memorizing difficult facts about several diseases.

Wish I had this book several years ago to help me plan the prototype layout and what engines to acquire. Highly recommend this book for NYC fans.

The book is well done, and the photos are super.
My five year old can't put the book down. It really shows the NYC in a way that was never seen before, unless you worked for the railroad. If you love trains, you must add this book to your collection.

This is a great short history of the New York Central System. Chapters 1 to 4 deal with the makeup of the system and history. Chapter 5 deals with Grand Central Terminal and New York electrification. Chapter 6 is the steam locomotive fleet. Chapter 7 is the diesel locomotives. Chapter 8 is the electric locomotives. Chapters 9 & 10 are about the freight and passenger service. The pictures used in the book are great. The amount of information is remarkable. If I were to purchase only one book on the New York Central System, this would be the book.

Noriega -- what a scourage on a hapless little country about to
become truly independent. How did it happen? Why did he reign so long? What went wrong and why? Panama has long been ruled by its "fifty families" but it never had a harsh dictator. How then did the complex, cruel and vindictive Noriega seize and retain such absolute power?

Professor Murillo's careful documented slice of reality provides useful answers. His vivid and accurate rendering presents a very bizarre and tragic story. As usual "the little people" paid with blood and suffering for events beyound their control. We should all ponder how drugs, mis-guided politics and lack of decisive leadership inevitably leads to corruption and suffering.

Have we learned our lesson? Probably not. We could were we to study and heed the lessons in this carefully written and accurate book.

I had the opportunity to read this book while I was in Panama last year and it's worth reading each of the 900+ pages. This book gives a very detailed and unbiased account of what has transpired in Panama for the last 90+ years since gaining their independce from Colombia, with special emphasis on the 21-year military government and the U.S. reaction (or lack there of) to Panama's situation.

It gives a very detailed account on the lives and roles of key players in the military government and sheds some light on a lot of things that were happening that were previously unknown by the general public. I would recommend this book to anyone that is eager to learn the truth about what really happened down there.

This book touches on the history of the United States Government's influence and control of the drug trade in the Americas. Truly honest people must read this book! This is a literary work that touches on critical issues of drugs in the United States and how the US government uses the media to manipulate it's citizens and the world.

If you are interested in the rural poor of Latin America, or have anything to do with Panama and improvement projects here, this is the bible. I have been in areas like the ones the author describes in her book, and even as a Panamanian, I was appalled to see how poor the poor can be. Evertyhing Rudolf said is true. Even so, the humanity she portrays in the lives of her characters, prevent them from being caricatures. They are real people, living their lives.

Rudolf gives us a unique look at the forgotten voices of Panamanian politics, society and culture. In the 1980s, we were led to believe that somehow, someway Panamanians were not well-suited for democracy. In Panama's Poor, we learn that the weak and poor of Panama have been struggling for a voice for countless years. When much of the writing on Panama focuses on the United States, the Canal and the elite in Panama City, Rudolf opens our eyes to what we should really be looking at: the authentic Panamanain.

The community of Loma Bonita comes to life for the reader and we begin to understand how the rural poor live in Panama, who they are, and the forms of human agency they have. Rudolf has an informed view, after spending more than twenty years interacting with the community of Loma Bonita. Highly recommended.

Probably, the story of Rwandan genocide is the most shocking international scandal of the post World War II era. The book is a brilliant reconstruction of that time, written with amazing clarity and based on well established facts.
In three months of 1994 about one million people was killed in organised genocide. The killing rate was five times faster than that achieved by the Nazis during WWII holocaust. But on the contrary to the Nazis, the Rwandan genocide happened in the full light of the international media, with the full knowledge of the UN Security Council and the Western governments.
Linda Melvern describes and documents in detail the role of the West in the genocide.

Tio Rico lives in a village in Oaxaca (wah-ha-kah), Mexico. He is a 77 year-old who became a pinata maker when rheumatism made it too difficult to continue his business of making sombreros.

A village boy collects newspapers and concrete sacks for Tio Rico. These he uses to fashion unusual and decorative pinatas. The process is explained by a delightful profusion of photographs which accompany the story. The author, George Ancona, also shows "puppets" which are child-size papier-mache forms worn by young folk dancers. He shows his own version of pinata formed over cardboard or balloons for those of us who cannot buy clay pots at a local market.

Children everywhere will enjoy this colorful book and be eager to try the craft. With luck, they will have patient teachers and learn some Spanish and/or English words, too! My favorite companion book is "Colors of Mexico" (isbn: #1575052164), illustrated by Janice Porter.

"THE PINATA MAKER" is a 5-star book for adults as well as children, and most appropriate for the 2003 church women's study of Mexico. Find a group of children to share this book with, and increase your enjoyment three-fold.

The Piñata Maker describes how a Mexican gentleman, Don Ricardo, became a piñata maker. It elaborates on how he makes his beautiful piñatas, while including a description of his way of life. The book is fantastic for individuals who are studying either English or Spanish. I'm using it both to become more familiar with Spanish and to teach English to a Spanish speaking person. It is written on an appropriate level for adults to use in this manner, but it is also an excellent book for children.

Both my 5 & 3 year-old children LOVE this book. It is a nice combo of something fun (the pinatas, the design, & just the thought of candy...) and reality (photos of Don making pinatas). It is simple enough for them to understand, and captivating enough for even my younger child. We haven't delved much into the spanish text, but will eventually. For now, we're working on making the star for my daughter's sixth birthday party!

this book allowed for one of the nicest vacations i have ever taken. more than bourbon street indeed; if you're into historical along with fun, good food, and the infamous celebratory attitude then this is the book you're looking for! it covers everything you can imagine plus the historical information with the descriptions that follow the maps for the various tours is priceless. we didn't take one tour save the plantation *oak alley* tour; didn't need to! the maps along with the additional information is all you need to create your own walking tours, driving excursions and much much more. i would also allow that personally i did read another book: Fabulous New Orleans by Lyle Saxon. the combination of the two really compliment one another. just my opinion. again, great book; i sincerely can't say enough.

Having visited NO before and having read three other "Guides" I was suprised by how different this book was from the others and how everything I personally wanted to know about was adressed in detail. Walking the Faubourgs is the best way to appreciate the very unique city behind the tourist hype and Mr. Delahanty tells you how. Other guide books are collections of data gathered from many sources, but this is a story told by someone who knows and loves his subject. Our morning walks through the Bayou St. John neighborhood for coffee on Esplanade Ave. were greatly enhanced by the information in the "Esplanade Ridge" section. The history is so much more amazing than the garishness of Bourbon St. My daughter, a six year resident of NO, is planning her wedding there and has found this an invaluable resource. There is an address and telephone number for everything. I am recommending this book to all of her wedding guests and buying a second copy for myself, having given mine to her. If you plan a trip to New Orleans, read this book before you go and carry it with you while you are there.

This book is unlike any other Travel Planning Book. It is descriptive and puts you right in the heart of the atmosphere! I picked this up on a whim with my traditional Frommers Travel Guide. I hardly have used Frommers at all for this upcoming trip. This book is all I need!!!! My husband and I have been reading the "itineraries" aloud to each other in anticipation of our trip. That way we can pop a post-it flag on the activities that spark our interest and plan out our own custom itinerary a few days before leaving. I love this book and guarantee our weekend trip will be more memorable because of this book!!! If you are planning a trip to New Orleans, buy it - you won't regret it!!!

This book turned a stroke of bad luck on our honeymoon into a honeymoon we will remember. Our original plans were to do a 7-day cruise, but after flying to Miami and getting an hour out to sea, the engine on our ship broke and the whole cruise was cancelled. We flew back home the next day and decided we would drive to New Orleans. We picked this book up that night and it helped us plan an entire new honeymoon at the last minute. We stayed at the Hampton Inn as described in Itinerary 16, which is just a block and a half from the French Quarter. Thursday morning we took the excellent Cemetery and Voodoo walking tour found in Itinerary 6. That afternoon we had our own perfumes and colognes created for us at Bourbon French Parfums (Itinerary 3). Friday we attempted to follow Day Two of Itinerary 16. The Zoo is gorgeous and very romantic, but don't get fooled into taking the timeshare tour that they will offer you at the harbor where you get your zoo\aquarium tickets. Saturday we stayed at the Victoria Inn from Itinerary 27. What a great place! It's beautiful and moderately priced. The Bayou boat tour (also Itinerary 27) was the highlight of the trip. We got to see dolphins swimming right along the boat! That night's dinner at Restaurant Des Familles was very good too. All of these ideas came from this book and helped make our honeymoon a romantic and memorable one. If you ever plan on going to New Orleans, or returning, this is the book to have.
